Cranial Osteopathy in Bristol

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathic technique is a more gentle form of osteopathic treatment. Your osteopath will use subtle adjustments to support the body’s alignment. The improved alignment of the anatomy allows for more efficient mechanics, lymphatic drainage, blood flow, nervous system regulation, digestive function and respiratory function. As these functions are restored the body is able to heal itself, reducing pain, inflammation and dysfunction.

The gentle nature of the techniques doesn’t mean that they are any less effective – they are working on very deep and significant areas of the anatomy. Small changes to these areas lead to large changes in the body’s health.

Although the name ‘cranial’ suggests it is used on the head (or cranium), these techniques can in fact be used on any area of the body, making them extremely effective for a wide range of problems.

How Does It Work?

Using light touch, your osteopath will feel for patterns of tension or imbalance in the anatomy of the body. These restrictions are then gently released, helping to restore balance, reduce strain, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Cranial technique is appropriate for a wide range of issues.

It can be particularly effective in cases where there is a combination of health concerns at the same time. Often there are links between different health conditions or different injuries, preventing the body’s ability to heal. Working with the deeper structures in the body produces widespread changes in the body’s function. This often allows multiple problems in the body to be affected positively at the same time.

Cranial technique can also be effective in treating long term or chronic problems. The techniques address the underlying factors that have been preventing the problem from resolving.

Some people simply have a preference for a more gentle approach – you can discuss your preferences with your osteopath during your appointment. Many people find cranial techniques deeply relaxing. By encouraging the body to work in harmony, cranial osteopathy promotes not only physical comfort but also a greater sense of overall wellbeing.

Because cranial techniques are so gentle they are often chosen for treating babies and children, and pregnancy or postpartum related issues.
